What is a Certified ESDM Therapist?

A Certified ESDM Therapist is a professional who been trained to fidelity to deliver the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM). They must have completed all levels of the ESDM training. After that, they spend 6-12 months of intensive training to meet the ESDM fidelity expectations. Therapists have to submit a series of videos to prove that they can deliver the ESDM. They also have to prove that they can write an individualised early intervention program. Certified ESDM Therapists must have an allied health qualification or other appropriate qualification. This includes Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and Early Childhood Teachers. To become a certified ESDM Therapist, the professional must have the knowledge to understand the child and develop a program to target all areas of development.

What is the ESDM?

Professor Sally Rogers and her colleagues developed the ESDM at the M.I.N.D. Institute at the University of California, Davis, in Sacramento, USA. The ESDM is a set of specific strategies that Certified ESDM Therapists and parents/caregivers use to work with young children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It is used in a natural learning environment. The ESDM is based on scientific evidence about how young children develop and learn. In addition, it takes into account the way that ASD affects early development and learning. This also includes the best ways to teach young children. In fact, the ESDM showed that most children with an ASD show significant improvements in cognitive and adaptive behaviours after the ESDM. Another key point, parents or caregivers can learn to apply the ESDM at home.  As a result, the child learns faster. This means better outcomes for the child.

How do I find Certified ESDM Therapists?

There is a list of certified ESDM therapists on the MIND website. Is your therapist is not on this list, then they are not certified in the ESDM.

Who does ESDM in Sydney?

At OneOnOne Children’s Therapy, we chose the ESDM as their intervention for young children with autism. This is because it has an evidence base that shows that the intervention works.
