Why do parents worry about it?
The number of words that the child says is often the first clue that the child’s speech and language is not developing appropriately. Children vary in their speech and language development but we expect a certain number of words by a particular age. Some children use 5 words at 18 months, and other children use 200. It may surprise you to know, that both can be in the normal range.
How many words do most children say?
- 12 months – 1
- 16 months – 10
- 18 months – 50
- 24 months – 200
What is the minimum number of words a child should say?
- 12 months – 0
- 16 months – 1
- 18 months – 5-10
- 24 months – 50
What if my child isn’t using the minimum number of words?
If a child doesn’t say the minimum number of words then we recommend a Speech Pathology assessment. Communication development is complex but the number of words a young says can reflect a language delay or disorder.
What will the Speech Pathologist do?
The Speech Pathology will look at how many words your child says. They will look at whether your child says them spontaneously or imitates them. They will assess your child’s overall communication development. After that, the Speech Pathologist will make a recommendation about therapy. Some children need Speech Pathology. Other children benefit from parent training and the parents carry out recommendations at home.
